What is the importance of otomicroscopy in CSOM?

Otomicroscopy helps us to visualise the hidden areas of the middle ear cleft. It helps in identifying polyps, granulations and status of the middle ear mucosa and ossicular chain if visible depending upon the size of the perforation.

• Visualize hidden areas like sinus tympani, facial recess, supra tubal recess and part of mesotympanum medial to ossicles
• Status of ossicular chain
• ABST swab can be taken
• Cleaning & toileting of sac & removal of flakes
• Differentiation between polyps & granulations
• Binocular vision
• Both hands free
• Magnification can be increased many times (fixed in endoscope)
• Anatomy can be studied as would be visible during the surgery of that case
